Death of a Metaphor be coming, yo.

The Void that is 'Real Life'

Wed Aug 19, 2009, 6:00 AM
Greetings DA adventurers. I feel like the capsule I've been living in over the summer has well and truly burst. For the past 10 weeks I've been arting my eyes out creating art for the game Quick As Thieves [link] as part of an international competition 'Dare to be Digital'.

We've, that is my team Gentlemen of Fortune (Will Wright, Andrew Knight, Lee Cresswell, Jamie Mackinnon and I, Michael Doig) have since gone on to take one of the 3 top prizes, and I can now put the clever words 'Bafta Nominated' somewhere on my CV. [link] . This is great because now that the bubble bursting is over, I have the fortunate responsibility of finding employment before I die.

PORTFOLIO is the word of the day.

I'll be developing my website folio for some time now, intensively revamping it for the eyes of employers. Any advice on that front would be great. I'll post up some of the work I've been doing for QAT soon, til then.

A Big Shout Out to the team Virtual Horizons, Joe, Jamie, Andy and Ben guys. You truly made Dare enjoyable for me, and the rest of my team. Hope you guys go on to do great things. And to the rest of the Dare Competitors, good luck!

  • Listening to: FLorence + The mAchine
  • Reading: CV's
  • Watching: Dare Trailers
  • Playing: DMC 4 (QAT too, of course)
  • Eating: Bacon!
  • Drinking: Cola ola ole hola!

Hey dude. Going pretty well I reckon. Managed to find a job at Denki now, so I'm working there full time for a bit into next year. Contract basis.

How are you getting on?

Oh awesome, well done dude!

Yeah not too shabby, just making my way through coursework right now really. 3rd year's much different from anything else i've done at uni, but its really enjoyable.

How are you finding it at denki? What kind of stuff have you been doing?

Learning 3DS Max mostly - some animation stuff in it. Just trying to give and receive knowledge with the other artists. Denki is a nice environment, and a good place to start my career in I reckon.

Any challenges you've faced in 3rd year?

Ah, I'm probably going to have to learn to use max sooner or later. From what I've heard exporting animation into game engines is a lot easier through max than maya... we had a lot of problems with animations from maya > XNA during next level dundee. It must be great working in a games studio. Can't wait to see some of your stuff!

Ah jeez, skinning in maya for the first time was a bit of a pain, I think I've got the hang of it now however. For some reason, my mesh kept folding in on itself whilst painting weights, though I've managed to overcome it now. At the time, trying to fix it was a bit like pulling teeth.

Apart from that, just trying to create decent quality textures. I could use a bit of reading material. I don't suppose you know of any decent books that might come in handy?
